Elijah’s Cup and Miriam’s Cup

Miram, Moses’ Sister Elijah’s cup is the fifth cup of wine poured during the Passover Seder reserved for Elijah, the Prophet, who is believed to visit each Passover Seder that takes place around the world. The four cups of wine that are poured during the Passover Seder represent the four distinct redemptions promised by God to the Hebrews in Exodus 6:6-7 as follows: 1) "I will take you out of Egypt," 2) "I will deliver you from Egyptian slavery," 3) "I will redeem you with a demonstration of my power," and 4) "I will acquire you as a nation. Elijah’s Cup symbolizes redemption for all humanity upon the arrival of the Messiah.

Miriam’s cup is a relatively new addition to the traditions of the Passover Seder meal whose symbolism is truly beautiful. The Miriam’s cup is filled with water and sits next to the Elijah’s cup on the Passover Seder table. The Miriam’s cup represents Miriam’s well, a magical water source which provided water to the Israelites in the desert. The Miriam’s cup also honors the role of women in the Exodus and in Jewish history. Learn more about Jewish Passover Traditions
