ANCIENT MENORAHS - Read the article!

The menorah carved in the Arch of Titus, 82 AD, is the model for the menorah used as the emblem for the State of Israel.

For the past month, I have been been intrigued by ancient menorahs and searched the internet to come up with an amazing photo collection of almost 50 ancient menorahs depicted in sculptures, mosaics, carvings, and paintings dating back thousands of years.

The 7-branched menorah is one of the oldest symbols in Judaism and has remained an enduring symbol of the Jewish people through the centuries. The first known menorah is believed to have been made for the Tabernacle and is mentioned in the Bible. It was lit every evening with pure olive oil prepared especially for this purpose by the High Priest. The central light was never allowed to burn out. The 9-branched hanukkiah is patterned after the 7-branched menorah and is used to celebrate the miracle of Hanukkah. Following the victory of the Syrians by the Maccabees, the oil that should have lasted one night, lasted 8 nights.

Risa's Wrap-up
I hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving. This is one of my favorite holidays of the year. This year, my family went around the table and each of us read a page from a beautifully written and illustrated children's book, "Giving Thanks: A Native American Story. " We had 18 people celebrate the holiday with us, with family from Maine, England, Brooklyn, and Queens. The partying continued all weekend with other family from Vermont and Connecticut.

Have a great week! Please keep in touch. Follow me on Twitter @jewishgiftplace, or on Facebook . If you send me a tweet, I'll tweet you back!
