Bar Mitzvah Gifts: “Rock” Shabbat and Bat Mitzvah Fun!
Posted by Ulana Illiano on June 15th, 2008 — in Holidays & Celebrations | Click here to commentI recently had the great privilege of attending my niece’s Bat Mitzvah at the Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Bellevue, Washington. 16 excited family members made the trip across country from New York to Washington State.
The service was held in the awe-inspiring Goldfarb Schwartz Sanctuary. It was a stunning natural space set amidst soaring pine trees and a rainy sky. It was inspiring just to sit there and be a part of it.
The Friday night service was a “Rock Shabbat”, which was just wonderful! The Rock Shabbat is a joyful, upbeat musical event that has the congregation tapping their toes and clapping their hands! The Temple describes it as a “rockin’ celebration” that is “mostly musical, partly mystical, totally participatory”.
The Temple also does a “Shabbat unplugged” service which is described as “a bit more intimate and serene than Rock Shabbat” but with “the same level of participation, warmth and spirituality”. If you’re interested, the Temple has a podcast page that will give you a taste of how wonderful it was! You can even download the performances to your MP3 player to enjoy on the road!
It was a special moment in my niece’s life and I was so glad to be able to be there for it. I gave her a Seeka Bat Mitzvah necklace which I thought was perfect for her because it is so colorful and youthful. I know it is something she will always treasure as a special token of the day she became a Bat Mitzvah.
