Elijah's cup is the 5th cup of wine used at the Passover Seder. The first four cups symbolize the promises made to Moses in the book of Exodus: the promise to rescue Israel from Egypt, the promise to deliver the Jews from slavery, the promise that they would remain a free people and the promise that they are God's chosen people. The fifth cup, Elijah's cup, is symbolic of the the coming Messiah. Guests of the seder do not drink from this cup but it is symbolic of the coming of the Messiah and the redemption that would bring. Elijah represents the messenger of the news of the coming Messiah. The Passover seder meal is not simply an commemoration of a historical event, but it is also portends the future and the coming of a redemptive Messiah.
Miriam's cup is a relatively new addition to the traditions of the Passover Seder meal. It's symbolism is truly beautiful. The Miriam's cup is filled with water and sits next to the Elijah's cup on the Passover seder table. The Miriam's cup represents the Miriam's well, a magical water source which provided water to the Israelites in the desert. The Miriam's cup also honors the role of women in the Exodus and in Jewish history in general.
